EPA & TECHNICAL TIPS: Headlight Restoration

Headlights are made of polycarbonate plastic which yellows over time from long exposure to ordinary sunlight. Besides being ugly and reducing the appearance of the car this can cause unsafe night driving by decreasing headlight intensity by as much as 70%.

In just a few easy steps, you can completely restore your dull, faded, yellowed headlights. The Presta Headlight Restoration Kit is extremely user-friendly. It includes: Presta Headlight Restoration Creme, buffing pad with drill attachment, cleaner and Presta Headlight Sealant. See just how easy it is to achieve amazing, long-lasting results with our kit.

To start, we recommend sanding the headlight using 800 grit wet sandpaper until the tarnish and factory coating are completely removed. Follow that with 1500 grit wet sandpaper to lessen the severity of the 800 grit scratches. Once sanding is complete, clean the area with water to remove the sanding residue.

Using Presta Headlight Restoration Creme and the 3" 100% wool buffing pad and drill attachment, included in the kit, buff the headlight to a clear, flawless finish. Buffing the headlight will leave some dusty residue. To remove this, first wipe away heavy dust and debris with a clean shop towel. Once the heavy material has been removed, thoroughly clean the area of all remaining debris using the Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) provided with the kit. IPA will remove all contaminants that might inhibit the sealant from producing a streak free finish. Wipe the area with a clean, lint-free shop towel until completely dry and dust free. Then, carefully mask off the headlight and surrounding area.

Finally, apply the headlight sealant, which was designed to replicate factory hardcoats. The Presta sealant provides similar weathering protection and scratch resistance to that of the original factory coating. This sealant uses an aerosol application with a flowing process that eliminates streaks left by similar wipe-on applications. Holding the can 4" to 6" from the headlight surface spray sealant from left to right and top to bottom until headlight is completely coated. The sealant will flow out and level itself on the headlight surface. Wipe away any excess that runs off. For the final step just pull the car into the sunlight to allow the product to cure – no need for an expensive UV lamp.

In good sunlight, the hardcoat sealant cures to the touch in about 5 minutes and will fully cure in approximately 30 minutes. Once cured, there is no upkeep or reapplication. You will have brilliant, clear headlights for years to come.
